Creative Spaces Collective Announces New Art Opportunities

The Creative Spaces Collective’s Fall Youth Mural Project is looking for a motivated and dedicated local artist that is interested in learning the mural making process from world renown artist and muralist Sarah Rutherford.  The assistant artist will be helping Ms. Rutherford run the Fall Youth Mural Program in September 2021, as well as assist with the painting of the mural.  The Assistant artist will be paid a stipend of $800 and will be working alongside Ms. Rutherford from the 18th-26th of September, 2021. The assistant does not have to have any mural experience, as they will learn the process from the lead artist.

The Creative Spaces Collective is a partnership of community organizations, artists, and patrons of the arts working to organize, expand, and fund initiatives that promote art education and public art experiences across Indiana County.

The deadline for the application is August 29th, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST.  Selected artists will be notified by September 3rd, 2021.

The Creative Spaces Collective is inviting High School students from Indiana County to participate in the first ever Youth Mural Project this September 2021. In this once in a lifetime opportunity for local students, the Fall Youth Mural Project will be led by world renown artist and muralist Sarah Rutherford. Ms. Rutherford painted the three story “The Only Way Out is Through” mural in downtown Indiana, PA, right behind Fox’s Pizza in October 2020. She is currently the Public Art Coordinator/ Founder of Roc Paint Division, the city of Rochester’s youth mural employment program, which began in 2016, as well as an artist.

The program will take 10 local high school students from Indiana County and one local assistant artist and immerse them in the mural making process, going from initial sketch and ideas, to final painting and rendering on the wall. The mural will be painted behind the Artist Hand, located on 732 Philadelphia Street in Indiana, PA.

The program will run from the 18th-26th of September, with (3) zoom meetings between the artist and the students prior to painting. (Usually in the evenings after school). During the zoom meetings the group will brainstorm imagery and colors, and plan the visual aspects of the mural with the lead artist Ms. Rutherford.  The students will be invited to paint during the weekends, and after school for the duration of the program. The mural will be completed on the weekend of September 26th, and the Creative Spaces Collective will have an unveiling event and party for the public on Sunday, September 26th at 10:00 am.
